We encourage you to request your consultation online or call the offices of one of the leading New Jersey plastic surgeons, Dr. David Evdokimow, at 908-221-1136 to learn more about breast lift surgery in New Jersey.
Before the Procedure
During your consultation with Dr. Evdokimow, the supporting mechanism of your breasts and the quality of the skin will be evaluated (sagging and drooping of the breast is an individual quality). The position of the nipple-areola complex and its relationship to the breast mound will be determined. Photographs will be taken. Mammograms are usually required.
Dr. Evdokimow will develop an individual treatment plan depending on your goals and his recommendations. He will explain the precautions you can take to ensure the safety and success of your procedure. First, smoking is strongly discouraged for at least 3 weeks prior to the surgery. So is the use of nicotine patches and nicotine gum. Blood thinners such as aspirin, Coumadin, and herbal supplements should be discontinued 3 weeks prior to the procedure. In patients with past wound healing problems, additional measures might be required.
New Jersey breast lift candidates who are considering immediate pregnancy should be discouraged from undergoing the procedure, since pregnancy and breastfeeding are known to stretch the supporting mechanism and the skin of the breast. Women who want to breastfeed in the future should discuss that with their surgeon, since this type of procedure may affect the ability to breastfeed.
The surgical markings are placed in the comfort of the office environment the night before the procedure and final instructions are given.
The Procedure
In New Jersey, breast lift surgery is performed under general anesthesia as an outpatient procedure. The choice of skin incision and the position of the resulting scar depend on the amount of the desired nipple areola repositioning. You may choose from several different incision types:
- 180 degrees around the top portion of the areola (half circle around and above the areola – crescent)
- Around the areola
- Around the areola and vertically down to the breast crease (IMF)
- Around the areola, vertically down to the breast crease, and along the breast crease
After the skin incisions are made, the breast tissue is reshaped and supported and the nipple and the areola are elevated to a new position. This allows less tension of the skin, resulting in favorable, less-visible scars. In select patients, liposuction of the breast can achieve elevation of the nipple areola complex.
When breast fullness in addition to rejuvenation is desired, patients often consider combining a breast augmentation with their breast lift.
After Surgery
You will be discharged home when you have recovered from anesthesia. Mild discomfort can be controlled with oral pain medication. You will be required to wear a support bra to ensure your comfort and protect your new breast shape as you heal. Normal physical activities can be resumed within 7 to 10 days. Avoid sleeping face-down or applying continuous pressure to the breasts for 2 weeks. Also avoid strenuous physical activities for several weeks, despite the absence of discomfort.
Scars are permanent, but quickly fade in visibility. The use of topical scar therapy helps this process. After the procedure, use of a supportive bra is recommended, because the lifted breasts are not immune from the effects of gravity and aging. When the recovery period is complete and you've returned to your usual routine, you'll see firmer, perkier, and more youthful breasts.
