Laser Scar Removal in New Jersey
David Evdokimow, MD
Whether your scars are from acne, surgery, or an accident, they can seriously impact your confidence, cause pain, and affect quality of life. In severe cases, scars can also limit mobility. Surgical methods of scar revision can significantly improve the appearance of some scars, but are associated with discomfort and the some risks of surgery and anesthesia. Now, there's a non-surgical method for improving different types of scars as well as stretch marks. Laser scar removal in New Jersey uses non-invasive fractional laser technology and non-ablative skin resurfacing to deliver excellent results with less discomfort and minimal downtime.

Scars
During laser scar removal with HOYA ConBio™ lasers or Palomar Fractional lasers, the laser energy penetrates deep within your skin without damaging the surface. Reacting to the laser light, your body begins the natural wound-healing process, triggering the production of new, healthy tissue. This new tissue replaces the damaged, scarred tissue for a look that is ultimately smoother and healthier.
Laser scar improvement is appropriate for all skin types. Treating acne scars can be particularly challenging as there is a large variation in scar appearance and treatment depends on the type of scar. Often, laser-resurfacing treatments are combined with injectable fillers and surgical excision.
Stretch Marks
Most of us are familiar with stretch marks. They are those parallel lines of overstretched skin. The appearance of the stretch marks varies according to age – initially they are raised and red, eventually becoming a lighter color and depressed.
Why do Stretch Marks Develop?
Stretch marks result from tears of the deeper layers of the skin (dermis) while the superficial layer (epidermis) remains intact. This leads to internal scarring of the skin. During the healing phase there is dilatation and ingrowth of blood vessels into the healing dermis, giving the typical red appearance of the stretch mark. As the scar matures, the blood vessel content the scar decreases, and they become lighter in color and wrinkled.
Stretch marks are associated with rapid expansion of body volume, changes of hormonal balance and/or intake of exogenous substances such as hormones or steroids. Risk factors include genetic predispositions, multiple pregnancies, twins, large babies, and significant weight gain during the pregnancy. Stretch marks occur in 90% of all pregnant women, in 70% of all adolescent females, and in 40% of all young males (although this is higher in athletes).
On women, stretch marks occur most frequently on breasts, upper arms, abdomen, flanks, lower back, hips and thighs. Men have stretch marks primarily in the same locations as women. They are frequently bothered by stretch marks on their arms and back (due to weight lifting).
Treating Stretch Marks
Unfortunately, no topical treatments can improve the appearance of stretch marks. Dermabrasion and chemical peels, for example, can offer only minimal results. Generally, Dr. Evdokimow will recommend surgery or laser treatments.
Surgery
Ultimately, the most effective treatment for stretch marks is removal of the affected area. As stretch marks are a common problem for pregnant women, they are often addressed through an abdominoplasty as part of a Mommy Makeover treatment.
Laser Treatments
New advances in laser technology, especially the use of fractional lasers and non-ablative skin resurfacing, can improve scars and stretch marks without surgery. Dr. Evdokimow uses fractional, non-ablative lasers that affect the deep layers of the skin without interfering with skin surface. Lasers stimulate fibroblasts (the collagen-producing cells of the skin) to produce more collagen. They also seal broken blood vessels. The end result is improved color and smoother, healthier-looking skin.
The FDA has cleared Palomar's fractional laser treatment for stretch marks.
